The Allure Of Fairy Games

In the media, video games have been known to get a bad rap from frustrated mothers and cranky politicians. It may not be innocent fairy games that are targeted, but the whole group tends be judged because of the violent ones. Some like to suggest that there is a connection between violent games and aggressive behavior in the real world. The truth is, studies have shown that there is no direct correlation between playing video games and fighting. People who have replicated any kind of scenario from a game, movie or novel, were unstable, and would have acted out aggressively anyway.

Though many games that get a lot of press are indeed violent, shoot-em ups, there are still a plethora of games that aren’t overtly dark and violent. Games that carry a theme of fantasy are very inspiring and appropriate for young minds. There are a lot of ethereal creatures in video games. From fuzzy aliens and dragons, to tree spirits and giants, games can offer a world saturating with the most wild of creations.

Fairies are a very popular mythical creature. They’ve been featured in countless works of art, and are a staple among young girls. Though fairies have made multiple appearances in console games, they’re typically side characters and entities, as opposed to being a part of the main cast.

For instance, in Okami, the main character is a magical wolf goddess, while her helpful sidekick is a fairy-like sprite. In the Shin Megami Tensei series, fairies are abundant. Some take on a much darker role, becoming adversaries who are into deadly trickery.

Disney holds the crown for fairy related media, and the company has even created a few titles devoted to fairies. Disney Fairies: Tinkerbell is an action game created for the Nintendo:DS. In addition to controlling Disney’s most famous pixie, Tinkerbell, players will get to chat and interact with other fairies like Iridessa, Fawn and Silvermist.

The game takes place in the fairy-filled world of Pixie Hollow, where the player can engage in a multitude of activities, such as dressing up Tinkerbell in different costumes, fixing things for friends, or making winter morph into spring. The graphics are quite nice, especially for a DS title. Though the backgrounds are static and pre-rendered, they are very well detailed and truly bring the fantasy to life. This title is great for little girls of all ages, because the controls are fairly simple and there’s no violence at all.

Another similar title by Disney, is called Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue. This game offers many of the same activities as well as additional and expanded content for even more interactivity within the world of Pixie Hollow.
